Newark Creative Place Commission

As part of a wider Creative Place Commission for Newark and Sherwood District Council, Studio Justine Fox was invited by New Practice to collaborate on the delivery of two colour identity workshops in Newark.

With the team from New Practice, we engaged with key stakeholders from the town including members of the district council, elected officials, and local businesses to understand the connection and heritage of this place and where their priorities lay in this first workshop. In the second we worked with students from a local college to gain insights into the experience of the town for Gen Z and how they would like to shape their futures there.

The combined output from these research groups was analysed, rationalised and aligned to create a meaningful and inclusive Newark-specific palette. This will form the basis for a broader place brand identity that local people subconsciously connect with to be incorporated into the Newark Town Centre Masterplan and as a showcase of Newark to attract visitor revenue.

New Practice have now used this palette in collaboration with Newark and Sherwood District Council in the design of a series of vinyls within the Town Hall to activate vacant units and improve wayfinding for visitors.

"Justine's extensive knowledge of colour and her support in interpreting emotional and location-specific meanings of colours have really benefited the project. Working with her has been a really enjoyable and valuable experience"
